  1. I'm on my mom's computer. It's very strange. And by strange, I'm pretty sure I mean boring. It's actually kind of nice, because it's such a pain in the ass going to a website that I don't have at my fingertips (ie: facebook) that I often don't bother going there at all. It definitely helps speed the writing process along.

  2. I watched Frost/Nixon last night (I also watched Music of the Heart again, go figure) and I loved ittttt. God, I love political dramas. Especially when they just hinge so much on a certain character. Or two characters. Whatever. I love it.

  3. And, because this information is highly relevant to all your lives:
    Days spent writing: 3
    Pages completed: 4
Hours spent watching Music of the Heart: 5 (note: never let number of pages completed exceed this)
    Characters: 3
    ScriptNotes: 16
Biggest challenge: Not watching Prime, knowing it will probably ruin one of my characters if I do.
Second biggest challenge: Trying to write dialogue that doesn't sound like something out of a Lifetime movie.

  1. I think this would be kind of a fabulous time to muse on this year of fandom (I start my fandom years in June because that's when I started fangirling for the first time). I was thinking about how you can have a great year with shitty fandoms and a shitty year with great fandoms, and this is definitely the latter, but the fandoms certainly helped a little. Seriously, check out this epic list.
    Gilda Radner June 13, 2008, 11:53 PM - 12:06 AM
    Nora Dunn
Jane Curtin July 10, 2008, shortly before 5:00 PM
    Helen Mirren August 12, 2008, 8:00 - 11:49 PM
    Dana Delany August 31, 2008, 8 AM - 11 PM
    Natasha Richardson September 23, 2008, 9 AM - 5:53 PM
    Madeline Kahn September 24, 2008, 4:30-9 PM
    Željko Ivanek December 14, 2008, 11 AM - 6:55 PM
    Jill Biden January 20, 2009, 2:03 - 2:07 PM
    Elizabeth Mitchell February 8, 2009, 4:57 - 6:15 PM
Michael Emerson February 9, 2009, before 6:26 PM
    Cherry Jones March 5, 2009, 7:30-9:30 PM
    Bob Gunton March 13, 2009, 11:30 AM - 6:25 PM
Lisa Edelstein (specifically Lisa Cuddy) May 3, 2009, 7:48 PM
    Meryl Streep May 17, 2009, 6:37-6:43 PM

God, that is fierce. Also, I pretty much non-fangirled Tina Fey for the entire first semester, so that was pretty rad as well. But seriously, look at it. Gilda Radner, Jane Curtin...awesome use of time. Helen Mirren and Dana Delany were fairly solid time-wasters. I don't really know what happened there with Natasha Richardson (it was kind of ridiculously short and resulted in nothing) but it was nice to have that on there, especially looking back now. Andre, Michael Emerson, Bob Gunton...those fucking weird guys made my year. Lisa Edelstein, that was awesome. It was more about House, and I do that pretty much every year, but I loved it anyway. And Cherry Jones? On 24? So life-owning. And finally, freaking Meryl Streep, just...brilliance all around. Also, so much variety. Three guys. A lesbian. Comedy, drama, some weird combination of both. Film, television, theatre. Politics. Britishness. Slovenianism. I love itttt.

  2. I wish I could post more about Meryl, because this would be an awesome thing to have a record of. But this is just one of those fandoms where I can't really express myself that way. Whatever. It's all good. However, I will say that I watched Music of the Heart today and I LOVED IT. SO MUCH. Okay, seriously, I am such a sucker for inspiring teacher movies. Especially ones that involve music or dancing or writing or some form of self-expression. I love them, pretty much unconditionally. So this was incredibly up my alley, especially because of the awesome acting, which is kind of rare for that genre. I wasn't 100% satisfied with the writing, but it was the 90's, so I'll let it slide. But it's just like...Meryl Streep playing the violin and then hugging a bunch of inner-city kids, so it's brilliant all over the place.

  3. Oh btw I also watched King of California today...holy shit, that was one of the most surprisingly amazing scripts I have ever seen transformed into a movie. I don't even know, it just seems to be like no movie has ever made me feel that way before. It was indie but also not too indie, like...the plot was really fascinating on its own aside from the relationships, but the relationships were really interesting too. It was a perfect combination because most movies seem to be lacking in at least one of those two areas. So, yeah. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

  4. I am definitely going to bed now because it is summer and I can do whatever I want. Also, I'm sending my laptop to get fixed (when you have 2 months to write a full-length screenplay, you generally don't want to be stuck with a computer that has a couple of rarely functioning keys), so I will most likely be updating from my mom's computer the next time you hear from me. I was hoping to go computerless while it was gone (I could use a peaceful week or two), but I'm totally crazy about this script and I need it to go places, so I'm thinking Final Draft and I will be joined at the hip during this time. That, and I will be watching about 600 movies featuring Meryl during that time. I've never spent so much time without watching TV. It feels nice, I think?

Mamma Mia

Okay, so I really want to talk about Mamma Mia (but mostly about Meryl's performance) because I'm having some deep thoughts and I don't want to forget them.

So many condensed deep thoughts )

I love revealing new fandoms. Especially ones I'm really embarrassed about. It's always such a challenge. Sometimes I can't even say who it is, so I just link to their wikipedia page, or I use fake names or drop subtle hints...well, I don't really have a reason to do that this time since it's not a 60-year-old guy with a self-comfort level that scares me. Bummer, right? So I'll just do it like this:

HEY GUYS. GUESS WHAT? IT'S MERYL STREEP.

The last time I fangirled her was about 5 years ago, shortly before I started my LJ, but it was your typical Meryl-fangirling lesbian time, so I don't really need to explain it. Except I sort of do, because Meryl has certain eras to her career that are all different. For me it was all about Adaptation, Angels in America, and The Hours. Never saw Sophie's Choice, The Deer Hunter, or Manhattan (too bad, because I now have a pact with myself never to watch Woody Allen movies or movies about the Holocaust, knowing the epic misery that will ultimately occur if I watch them. I do, however, love experiencing the misery of the Vietnam War, so I am all set for this deer movie), and I was out of there before Prime and The Devil Wears Prada. So I guess I would characterize the Meryl I fangirled as somewhat abstract and dysfunctional, but also really classy and serene. It was a fabulous time for her. Remember that leafy necklace she wore to the 2003 Oscars? Those were the days.

The irony of all this is that it was Mamma Mia that ignited this crazy thing in my life. At first I was pretty pissed at her for taking that role; I think it's a stupid musical based on a terrible premise and crappy music (and god, the directing was terrible. French and Saunders were right on) and she can clearly do much better. But I guess I can't blame her for wanting to do something lighthearted after doing every depressing movie ever. I doubt (heh) she passed up any brilliant, Oscar-worthy offers for this one. Because, yeah, she still did Doubt, and that was awesome and slightly life-owning. So, yeah, cool beans.

I feel compelled to mention that it is the fabulous Tina Fey's 39th birthday. Over the last year, Tina has been a force of awesomeness in my life, and I think she is the closest thing I have to a long-term fandom. I'm not attracted to her at all (except when I watch Mean Girls and wish I had never dropped calculus), which is probably why she consistently stands out amidst the gazillions of fandoms that have come and gone since then. She's an incredible writer, and if I can ever figure out how to exude that kind of brilliance, I will be set for life. ILY TINA.

  1. I have an announcement to make. I am officially 100% obsessed with Doubt. The play, the movie, whatever. John Patrick Shanley is a genius, forever. It's just a perfect combination of simple things and I just want to watch it over and over. At first I was wary about Meryl because I pictured Cherry in my head when I was reading the play, but shit, she was good.

  2. I had a dream that Tina Fey answered my question on Ask Tina, and then we hung out. It was pretty awesome. I miss the days when I enjoyed her more than anyone. It was so simple and fandomless. It's amazing what you can accomplish when you're not attracted to someone.

  3. Um, so you know the speech that I flipped out over a few weeks ago because I got a D on it? Um, apparently I got an 85%. She wrote 85/128, and usually they're graded on weird point scales, so I turned that into a percentage and it was 66. But apparently she meant "85% / 128 points." So yessssss, life is good.

  4. 24 7.19 )

  5. Only two weeks of school left! I have like a million papers to write during that time, but I don't even careeee. I'll have three whole episodes of 24 to watch without the pressure of homework and crap. Just...fangirling, and writing fic until 1 in the morning like my life depends on it. That Ethanbenry fic needs to happen (And I DO mean Ethanbenry. Something about the island having a portal to the White House? I don't even know. I just want them to have sex). Oh man, and no interfering with the Lost finale either. I LOVE SUMMER. lmfao that reminds me of Phoebe meeting Mike's parents on Friends. "So where does everyone summer?"

  1. Here's what I had to say last night:
lmfao Jack Sour. IT IS JACK BAUER, WHEN HE HAS TO SAVE THE WORLD AFTER EATING TOO MANY LEMONS. WILL HE MAKE IT? I'M NOT QUITE SURE. And then like, they wear off and I guess he'll have to accidentally eat more. It's an addiction, man. You can't stop it. Don't even try.

I think every show should operate under this premise for one season. Damages season three--Patty Hewes eats too many lemons. And then she has to try not to be a bitch. Which is never gonna happen, let's face it. And then she files a lawsuit against the colony of lemons because they hurt small children. She has to do all kinds of corrupt things to get her way.

lmao okay those were the only two shows where I could make it work. If that. WAIT. WEST WING, YO.

    God, I need sleep.

  2. I am kind of obsessed with [livejournal.com profile] obama_daily. Just because [livejournal.com profile] biden_daily doesn't make me cry every five seconds thinking about the meaning of life and a magical journey and all that good stuff. I will literally like, go through an entire picspam there and just cry the entire time. It's like having my period, just cheerier and with less blood.

  3. I feel really haunted by Glenn Close right now. I don't know, man. She's everywhere. And by everywhere, I mean...under a youtube search for "glenn close." Yeah, I dare you to explain that one.

  4. Okay, I have a confession to make. I don't hate Meryl Streep that much? I was kind of just pissed at first after focusing on more underrated actresses who were cast under her shadow, but I'm over it. Her Oscar nomination for DWP was really unnecessary, and the trailer for Mamma Mia scared me, but whatever. It's not like she asked for that nomination, and she can do whatever movies she wants. Maybe she just wanted to have a good time after playing so many manic-depressive characters. Anyway, I think she's a little overrated and some other actresses do lose opportunities because of that. But she's still a really, really good actress, and she is so classy. I loved her speech last night; I think she does a fabulous job of making light of the Hollywood elite's obsession with her, which is something I wouldn't even know how to joke about, but she takes it just far enough to be funny and not superior or bitchy about it.

LIES.

Seriously, guys, I'm expecting questions about The Emperor's New Groove. :P

I got an 88 on my Physics quiz!!! I have a C+ now!!! HAPPY TIMES.

Anyway, [livejournal.com profile] jillkins did this. So I'm doing it. It is basically a very brief history of my movie/TV/person fandoms. I would go into more details, but I would bore myself to death, so this is just a circumstancial explanation of my semi-epic list of all the people I heart and when I liked them. You can find the list HERE.

Fandom History )

Tomorrow = awesomest day of my life. Hollywood & History final, which is not a final at all, and then I get to go home. *happy dance*

When Meryl Streep opens a can of whoop-ass, Sally Field jumps out.

([profile] illusory_thrill told me I should post that, completely sans explanation. It's so true, though. There needs to be a set of Sally Field random facts like the Jack Bauer/Chuck Norris ones. "Sally Field once hit someone for ruining a take. ...oh, wait." That definitely happened in real life. Good times. I love how I totally fail at posting that without an explanation now that I've written this huge parenthetical thing.)
